Is Islaam a religion of peace?

As I went about my daily routine of reading blogs, I came across a title that caught my attention. “Is Islam a religion of peace?”
The author, whoever it may be said,
“Islam means Peace!†Islam is a religion of peaceâ€, these are the words we here constantly uttered by the moderate muslims, who are quick to jump at operations carried out by the Mujaheedin. So, here I ask: Is islam a religion of peace? No it is not, Allah (SWT) clearly tells us to fight the kuffar till Islam is dominant and the kuffar have both stoped occupying ourland and are paying Jizyah.
How is Islaam not a religion of peace? They can quote verses and ahadeeth that talk about war but how dare they act like Islaam is a war hungry deen?
In the past we lived next to jews and christians peacefully. We had contracts with them and they agreed to the terms and life was pretty much peaceful for all. They had their lives protected under contract and what not.Â
The Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu `alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘Do not wish to meet the enemy but when you meet the enemy, be patient…’ As I read that certain entry, I asked myself, are these Muslims doing the opposite of this statement? Yes, we are in a time of war but with many injustices happening on both sides. We are in a time where people go about preaching the permissibility of killing women and children intentionally, when clearly Rasulullaah forbade it!
Also, when the kaafir says, Islaam is a religion of terrorism, these same muslims jump up and say, yes Islaam is a religion of terrorism. But what is the definition of terrorism in the eyes of these kuffar? Are we simply agreeing to what they say without clarification? It seems to me that all we are doing is giving them more fuel, when there is no need for it. We aren’t a people who are after killing anyone we find. We aren’t a people who will dishonor a woman and rape her like these people do. We aren’t a people who are ignorant of the importance of life. But when people agree to this, are we sending the opposite message to people?
Islaam is a religion of balance. It calls to living in peace with people and that is why we have the jizyah. It calls away from war if there is no need for it. And if there is a need for it, it gives rules. Many of which are being broken by people today and which are still being praised. The Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu `alayhi wa sallam) did not praise the action done in war when he found out a woman had been killed but instead he forbade the killing of women and children and admonished Khalid ibn Waleed (radhiyallaahu `anhu). If the Sahaba made these mistakes, what makes anyone else safe from them? Why should we praise something that is clearly against the deen of Allaah?
Instead of saying Islaam is not a religion of peace, we need to be promoting that Islaam doesn’t like war but if it has to be done, Allaah the Almighty, has given us the rules that will ensure that such injustices like the ones occuring in Iraq and Afghanistan, do not occur.
We truly are blessed to have a deen that has taught us the meaning of life and the importance of it. Islaam has given us the proper direction for everything.
